Ultra minimal responsive website and portfolio management system for London-based photographer Will Corry.
Context:
Will Corry is a London based photographer working on Fashion, Editorial and Advertising projects.
Requirements:
Will wanted an ultra-minimal website with as much focus on the photography as possible, it also needed to be responsive and work within the differing constraints of user interaction on desktops and laptops versus tablets and smartphones. It also needed a customised Content Management System (CMS) which enables Will to update and manage all information displayed on the website.
Solution:
Having seen the bespoke site that I have built for myself which uses a timed slideshow to display project imagery driven from a custom CMS, Will was keen to have something similar for his own website but with even more focus on the images.
The entire user interface except the photographs is hidden on desktop and laptop viewports until the user either moves their mouse or a keyboard input is detected using custom JavaScript. On tablets and mobiles this would have not been as user friendly so simple bullet points are visible alongside the images which when touched show navigation elements, the same navigation elements appear on desktop with any interaction via keyboard or mouse by the user.
Clean and clear typography is used sparingly when absolutely necessary in-line with the minimal aesthetic Will wanted for his website.
Results:
The website is an example of ultra-minimal design, paring everything back but doing so with style. Will recently published a photobook 'Socially Distant' of images taken during Covid-19 lockdowns as an edition of 150 copies and was featured in the British Journal of Photography digital exhibition Edition 365.
